Why special sewing furniture?

Let’s get this out of the way first. No one needs a specialized piece of furniture to sew. You can easily sew on your couch, or at the kitchen table. You can also sew by candlelight, like our ancestors.

But do you?

Just like modern compact fluorescent light bulbs have replaced the oil lights of the middle ages, so has furniture evolved. Yes. You can sew on the couch. It’s a pleasant activity to relax and unwind. But if you are seriously into sewing, if you think about sewing more than Isaac Merritt Singer, then you need equipment that will meet your needs.

What features do you need?

Functionality

When you invest in a piece of sewing furniture, you want to make sure you are getting value for your money. A sewing table should help you sew, otherwise what’s the point? Is your sewing machine going to fit in it? Will a cutting table hold all your patterns? Will if fit into your room? What’s the surface feel like? Is it stable?

Every piece of sewing equipment has a function, from your sewing machine to the chair you sit on. Look closely at all the features to determine if it will work for you. Don’t just buy anything out there just because it’s called a sewing table. Figure out what features are important to you and check closely. Will it do what it’s designed to do?

Storage

You don’t need just a place to hold all your sewing supplies. You need all your stuff where you can reach it, while you’re sewing. Anyone can store their sewing gear in a fancy cabinet, or a nice chest of drawers, but can you access it while you are sitting at your sewing machine? A specialized sewing table has everything close at hand. You don’t have to decide what to take with you to the table; it’s all there.

Comfort

Look around you. Everyone is different. Your mother is smaller than you, your sister is shorter. Why settle for a table that works only marginally well for everyone? Height adjustable sewing tables are perfect for every person. Just set it to your optimal position and you can forget about reaching across high tables, or cowering over low ones.

Space

Unless you’re Martha Stewart, you may not have space for a dedicated sewing room. Sewing cabinets that fold up behind cupboard doors make great use of the limited space in your home. When you’re not sewing, all your equipment is stowed out of sight. When the urge comes and it’s time to get down to the business of sewing, just fold out all your gear, revealing a workstation set up for your sewing needs.

Style

When your work space looks good, it makes you feel great. A good piece of sewing furniture will inspire you. A positive work environment produces positive results. And once those creative juices are flowing, you can come up with your masterpiece. Remember this is your space, your zone to do with what you like. Take advantage of it. Own it. Make it yours.

And if you don’t have a dedicated space, style may matter even more. Your sewing equipment may be in your family room and you don’t want to compromise your decor. A nicely finished piece of furniture can complement your particular style. Whatever your taste, there’s something that will work for you and your design preferences.
